Dear CASA Supporter,

Welcome to Voz de los Niños, your monthly newsletter keeping you in the know of all things CASA of El Paso!

Volunteer Spotlight

This month our spotlight shines on Dr. Sarah Frioux.  Sarah has been a CASA volunteer for only a short time, but has been doing phenomenal work on a very difficult case. Her medically fragile CASA child has been waiting for permanency for five years, due in part to her deteriorating health. Sarah, a pediatrician at WBAMC, has played an integral role in getting her child re-assessed medically, initiating a medication review, and getting the child's medical equipment updated. In the short few months that Sarah has been on the case, she has connected her child to services which will in-turn give her child a better quality of life, as well as restablishing permanency as an option once she is stabilized. Though a full time physician and mom, Sarah finds the time to visit with her child regularly as well as submitting reports and participating in case staffing.  Thank you for your dedication Sarah!

Thank you to the Paso Del Norte Foundation!
As you know, our recent fundraiser was chosen by the Paso Del Norte Foundation to be a Challenge Fund Event.  In early July, we were happy to receive their check, matching 50% of all new or increased sponsorships and donations!  We are extremely grateful to have been chosen for this and will make certain to put these additional funds to good use.  Thank you PDN Foundation!

Texas CASA Survey on

 Trauma Informed Care

Texas CASA is conducting a survey of all CASA volunteers, staff and stakeholders on Trauma Informed Care.  If you would like to participate, please follow this link before Friday July 31st.

Every child in the child welfare system has experienced trauma, but before we can effectively develop recommendations and strategies to better address it and help children begin to heal, we must have a realistic picture of the current state of trauma-informed care in child welfare. This survey will help create that picture by targeting all of the groups that interact with children in the system and asking them about their training on and understanding of trauma and its impact on children. Groups included in the survey are Child Protective Services (CPS) caseworkers, foster parents, judges, mental health providers and CASA volunteers, among others. Participation is voluntary and anonymous.

Help a Foster Child have a Quinceañera!

For the past 13 years, El Paso Foster Parents Association has raised funds to provide quinceañeras for girls in foster care. They are hoping for donations once again for a group quinceañera on August 14th.  For more information or to share your support, please contact Ceci Navarrete (740-2397) or Marie Zaragoza (328-0808). While this is not a CASA sponsored event, it benefits the same children we serve!

CASA in the Community

Did you know that UTEP has a Law School Preparation Institute (LSPI) for students who want to pursue a career in law?  Students who enter the LSPI program have the opportunity to become CASA volunteers as part of their course work and are supervised by UTEP Professor Lisa Soto and CASA staff Volunteer Supervisor Jackie Heins.  This month we have a new crop of LSPI students beginning the process to become CASA volunteers.  Seeing such drive and motivation in college students is an inspiration!

Updating Background Checks for CASA Volunteers

Hopefully you have already seen our notices requiring the updating of background checks for CASA Volunteers. If you were sworn in BEFORE October 1, 2014, we need to re-do your DFPS/CPS background check to align with the state's new system.  All that is required of you is to complete the form giving permission to process the checks.  If you haven't already done so, please return the authorization form to Arianne Marcee in a prompt manner. This is a requirement to continue as a CASA Volunteer and allows CASA of El Paso to be in compliance with the state and Texas CASA.  For those of you who have already sent yours in, thank you for your quick response!

If you need another copy via email or mail, request it here.

Thank you for your continued support of CASA of El Paso! Together we can make a lifelong difference in the life of an abused or neglected child.
